Policies and Procedures

Attendance Policy:

Attendance and participation in class discussions are required and constitute a significant portion of your final grade. You are permitted to have three unexcused absences. Students will lose 5 points from the class participation grade for each unexcused absence after that.

Use of electronic devices: 

Use of laptops, tablets, smart phones, and other electronic devices during class for purposes not related to this course is disrespectful to the instructor and distracting to other students.  You may use your devices to take notes during class or to look up further information on a topic being discussed.  Students using their devices during class may be called on to share what they are learning with the rest of the class.

Policy on Late Written Work:

All writing assignments must be handed in on time unless you have a documented (i.e. in writing) medical excuse or family emergency. Unexcused, late written work will be penalized by subtracting 5 points for each day late.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Please contact me privately to discuss your specific needs if you believe you need course accommodations based on the impact of a disability, medical condition, or if you have emergency medical information to share. I will need a copy of the accommodation letter from Student Disability Services in order to arrange your class accommodations. Contact Ms. Natalie Stimpson-Byers, Coordinator of Student Disability Services in room 241, Copernicus Hall, 860-832-1957, for further information on how to request an accommodation. Student Disability Services maintains the confidential documentation of your disability and assists you in coordinating reasonable accommodations with your faculty.

Academic Misconduct:

All students are expected to demonstrate integrity in the completion of their coursework. Academic integrity means doing one’s own work and giving proper credit to the work and ideas of others. It is the responsibility of each student to become familiar with what constitutes academic dishonesty and plagiarism and to avoid all forms of cheating and plagiarism. Students who engage in plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct will face academic and possibly disciplinary consequences. Academic sanctions can range from a reduced grade for the assignment to a failing grade for the course. From a disciplinary standpoint, an Academic Misconduct Report may be filed and a Faculty Hearing Board may impose sanctions such as probation, suspension or expulsion.
